This is why we have invited a former customer to write a blog post for us.

"My wooden front door had been sticking for years. We didn't replace it when it first started to because we couldn't afford the cost of a new front door when we didn't really need to - the door was still functional, despite the inconvenience. We did keep checking our options, just in case, but the only kind of front door we could just about afford was a wood-style uPVC front door from an online retailer. Unfortunately for us, when we checked it out in the flesh, so to speak, it just wasn't realistic enough to have suited our property, which has wooden windows and a distinct appearance.
Last winter, the sticking got so bad that we were forced to buy a new front door. After searching around for the best price, we stumbled across composite doors. They were a little cheaper than the cheapest, most basic wooden door that we had found that we could both afford, and that would suit our property. The long list of benefits on the website astounded us! After our experience with uPVC fake wooden doors, we took the effort to go and view a door to make sure it was realistic enough to look OK. We were pleasantly surprised, the composite door even felt like a wooden door to open and close because of the way it had been weighted. Appearance-wise, it was realistic enough at a distance that it would not look odd on our house, and anyone who saw it would probably think it was wooden. Up close, you can tell it is not wooden, but only from minor signs, like the surface of the door has a slight sheen to it that gives away the fact. Also, you can tell by the fact the door is a little too perfect - every wooden door we have seen has some sort of 'quirk'. While initially we missed the the character of wood, we quickly became aware of the benefits. As it was winter, we noticed the difference in the temperature of our front room immediately. Before, we had a thick curtain across the door and a draught excluder along the bottom, but it was still a bit draughty. With the new front door, we didn't need any of that and it has made such a difference to the overall temperature and comfort of the room.
We've had the composite door for nearly a year now and are very pleased to report that there seem to be no changes to the door with the seasons - something we had gotten used to with wood. Overall, we (and our visitors!) are very impressed with the door and happy with our choice - we take every opportunity to recommend composite doors when we come across a less than average door!"
Most online composite door companies offer composite doors between 7-10 days. This is still quite fast, but when you really need a replacement front door fast, it's just not quick enough.

Certain styles and sizes of composite door can be delivered within just 3 days. This means you can secure your home quickly and easily without the worry of leaving your home, possessions and family vulnerable to any potential attacks. Once fitted, the new front door will offer the highest protection against damage or entry by force.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-33643163432255663192011-02-06T07:50:00.000-08:002011-02-06T07:50:41.694-08:00The True Cost of Front DoorsComposite doors are not the cheapest doors on the market. They are often marketed as being the best value for money, this is not a lie however. When you are making any large purchase, you should consider the real value of what you are buying. You may have heard of the term 'false economy'. This is a common occurrence - you buy something that is cheap and it lasts barely any time at all or has significant faults, making it more expensive to sort out or replace than if you had just spent a bit more and gotten something of quality in the first place.
So what factors should you consider when it comes to front doors?

Lifespan - this is probably the most obvious consideration when it comes to deciding the true value. If the more expensive door has a considerably longer lifespan than the cheaper door, it is probably a better investment and overall better value.

Hardware - it is important to check the quality of the hinges, locks and other hardware components. Cheap hardware can not only lead to problems with the functioning of the door and require replacements, but if the hardware breaks it can sometimes cause damage to the door itself.

Energy efficiency - an external door with low energy efficiency can cause your energy bills to be significantly higher. It is important to get a front door that will not be affected by heat changes. Cheap doors will often warp, shrink or expand which cause gaps that let the heat out.

Maintenance - All front doors require maintaining throughout their lifespan to ensure they stay operating at their best. Some doors, like composite doors, require just an oiling to the hinges. This works out to be relatively cheap. Other doors, such as wooden doors, require the hinges to be oiled also, but for the surface to be sanded and repainted or varnished periodically. uPVC doors require a special cleaner to ensure the surface remains clean.

Online suppliers, such as the Composite Door Shop, offer the ability to order side panels at the same time as a composite door.

Side panels are the panels around the front door. These panels are often glazed. Each panel has an individual name - full length side panels, half-length flag windows and top lights are the windows that run along the top of the door and/or side panel.
Side panels are especially good in situations where there is little light passing in to the hall. For those worried about privacy, but not wishing to hang net curtains, there are two choices - either only to get top lights, allowing light through the top windows, out of reach of peepers, or to choose side panels with an obscure glass backing.
Obscure glass backings is where the internal glass panel of double glazing is etched with a pattern which obscures the view. Different patterns offer different amounts of obscuration, so you can choose how much privacy is offered by the glass. This way, you can have a light and airy hallway with a smart front door, stylish side panels and as much privacy as you like.

If standard glazed side panels aren't to your liking, you can order composite side panels instead. These full length side panels can be placed on either side, or both sides, of the composite door and can be coupled with top light windows if preferred. Composite side panels can come as solid or glazed, to match your composite door. The colour, style and glazing used are all suited.

When replacing a front door, it is best to order side panels at the same time, to ensure a good fit and contrast.
Front Door ColoursUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-29028889579176833702010-04-16T07:11:00.000-07:002010-04-16T07:11:07.074-07:00Composite Doors in Modern HomesComposite doors are suitable in any home, especially modern homes and new builds. The smart, attractive appearance of the door adds warmth and elegance. There are many options to choose from with a composite door. You could choose from seven colours, a host of different designs and, if you choose a glazed door, many different attractive glass designs. With all the different style options available, you can really add personality to your entrance.

The benefits of having a composite front door go beyond appearance and style. Composite doors are renowned for their superior quality, longevity and function. The front doors have thermal cores which make them up to six times more energy efficient. To add to this efficiency, there is the fact that the doors do not shrink or expand with heat changes, so the door will remain flush inside the frame - preventing draughty gaps from forming and the door from sticking.
There are also many security benefits. The tough skin of the door is stronger than most other front doors, resisting damage and cracks. Composite doors come with multi-point locks as standard, holding the door in to the frame in multiple places, ensuring that your home remains secure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-75326024936032947152010-02-12T07:23:00.000-08:002010-02-12T07:24:24.902-08:00Front Door ColoursWhen choosing a new front door, many people worry about the choice of colour. With wooden doors this may not matter much - it can easily be sanded and re-painted or varnished with a different colour. But what about other doors?
uPVC doors come in a very limited choice of colours. More often than not, you can only get white uPVC doors. Sometimes you have the option of a light or dark wood finish to the uPVC door - but it will cost you over £100 extra for the privilege.
As mentioned in the last post, uPVC doors tend to lose their colour and look musty and grubby. Wood also tends to fade and lose its lustre as it is exposed to the elements.
For those wishing to avoid these problems, a composite door is the answer.
Not only will composite doors stay looking smart, but they are available in seven colour choices. The range of colours are likely to suit every taste.

White is ideal for most situations. Thanks to the protective skin, you don't need to worry about staining or discolouring. The door won't require much maintenance at all, making this the easiest and cleanest white door you'll ever own!

When you've finished choosing a colour, why not consider your Front Door Mat?
Here's a handy checklist for anyone buying a new front door.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-8127194558376610402010-01-08T09:28:00.000-08:002010-01-08T09:31:29.390-08:00Composite Front Doors - Glass Reinforced PlasticAs the name suggests, composite doors are made from a variety of materials. uPVC and wooden frames are skinned with a composite material known as glass reinforced plastic (GRP) and then filled with a strong, thermal core.
GRP is a plastic which has been bonded with fibres of glass to create a composite material that is strong and durable but also lightweight. The addition of glass phases out the usual issues that occur when using plastic.
You may have noticed that cheap uPVC doors are prone to discolouring over time. Coloured uPVC doors will also fade if they are in an area where they are exposed to high levels of UV light. They are difficult to clean, sometimes requiring special chemical cleaners to remove stains, most of which will usually be too ingrained to remove in any way. These problems are not applicable to composite doors, due to the GRP skin. They are protected from UV light, so they won't fade or discolour. The finish is long-lasting and low-maintenance, so you won't have to worry about it. The front door is so easy to clean that you can just use a cloth to wipe it down if it shows any sign of dirt. Because the wooden frame is encased within the door, the door will not rot as doors made entirely from wood would.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of glass reinforced plastic, the strength also means a very good level of security. Composite doors have been tested over and over and it has been found that they provide a much, much higher level of security than any of the standard doors on the market. If you dislike the appearance of metal-enforced doors but need the protection, consider buying a composite door. It has been known that persistent burglars are more likely to give up than gain access to a composite door.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-86786490683486132462010-01-04T05:12:00.000-08:002010-01-04T07:02:40.365-08:00The Importance of a Good EntranceFront doors are important. They are the first impression of your home. They are used daily, several times a day even. They protect your home from weather vulnerabilities. They protect your home from potential criminal attacks. Yet, despite their importance, not many people consider them enough. As long as the door grants access, keeps the wind out and locks, people are quite happy just to make do. That is, until something happens and it becomes obvious that the front door is not meeting it's requirements.
To ensure you make the right choice when buying a new front door, check out this little guide on buying a new door, complete with checklist.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-4672042215260005452009-12-29T04:02:00.000-08:002009-12-29T04:56:00.710-08:00New Front Door StylesChoosing a new front door can be very stressful. There is so much to consider: the function of the door, the security of the door, the safety of the door, the size of the door, the energy efficiency of the door, the cost of the door, the longevity of the door, the maintenance required by the door, the colour of the door and the overall look of your entrance.

So you've found a door that meets your practical and security needs, but then you discover it only comes in 2 styles - both of which you dislike, and the colour choice is even worse. To avoid reaching this point, I suggest starting your front door search by looking at composite doors. Likely to meet your every need in security, practicality and cost, the door comes in a total of 14 designs and 7 colours. With this range of choice, you may find you don't need to look any further!

The 14 different designs are split amongst 7 different styles: Westminster, Kensignton, Chigwell, Dalston, Mayfair, Trafalgar and Finsbury. The styles range from simple and classic to more intricate and modern designs. If you prefer the minimalistic and traditional look then the Kensington would be suited for you. The four-panel design comes with or without glazing. The Westminster is a smart and elegant 6 panel door, available in 2 different glazing options or solid. The Chigwell and Dalston are fancier variations of the four panel Kensington. The Trafalgar has a large window, ideal as a back door or for where the hallway is dark. The Finsbury composite door is very similar to the Trafalgar, with one large window that is rounded. Lastly, the Mayfair is an exquisite design offering 3 different glazing designs.

Each glazing design comes with a number of glass patterns, as well as privacy and security options.

For more information on front door security, I highly recommend checking out the Front Door Blog's Security Series - covering doors, hinges, glasses, hardware and more.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-26554579511506936922009-12-18T05:24:00.001-08:002009-12-18T08:07:35.055-08:00Composite Front Doors - The Energy Efficient ChoiceFor many people, the level of insulation in their home is a top priority. Having a well-insulated home reduces the cost of energy bills and can help to reduce you carbon footprint.

The first consideration is usually loft insulation. It is relatively cheap, and since heat rises, it is often the one to have the most impact on the overall warmth of your home. If your loft already has the required amount of insulation, the next consideration is energy efficient windows. Single pane windows and old, poorly glazed windows leak heat and allow draughts. Replacing the windows with A-rated energy efficient windows from a reputable company will insulate your home the best. After considering windows, it is vital to consider doors - old doors will have often changed shape with weathering over the years and the poorly fitted door will allow draughts in. Composite doors are a modern door made from several different materials that has the best insulation properties. Not only do the doors not bend or warp due to reinforcement, thus never causing draughts from gaps, but they are injected with a thermal foam, giving the door six times the level of insulation that a wooden door would provide.

Front Door Security
HingesUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-71648766403639379702009-12-16T08:16:00.000-08:002009-12-16T08:57:47.991-08:00Composite Door StyleComposite doors come in seven designs. Almost all of these designs have several variations of glazing and panels, for you to choose the level of privacy and light allowance that suits you and your home. Further customizations can be made by choosing from a large range of door glass designs. These glasses come in simple designs or more intricate stylish designs. If you choose a door with a large central window, you may prefer to choose a backing of obscure glass to give you more privacy. Again, there are a number of options to choose from - each one providing a different look and a different level of privacy.

Make sure you choose a door shop that offers you a full range of options, so you can get the door that suits your needs perfectly.

What are composite doors?
Composite door securityUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-1671613053480886702009-12-01T03:34:00.000-08:002009-12-01T03:50:30.459-08:00Composite uPVC Door - Modern PerfectionA composite uPVC door is the perfect addition to your home. The door was designed in recent years, taking advantage of modern technology to phase out any potential flaws. If you've ever seen a composite front door, then you'll know that it was designed with function in mind, not just cost and appearance.

Each composite uPVC door is made to order. Don't just go to your local DIY warehouse to pick up a standard front door which may or may not fit perfectly. This results in gaps, drafts, doors which get stuck in the winter and summer and poorly secured locks. Instead, measure your front door and get your new door made to fit.

What are Composite Front Doors?
Front Door History
Composite Front Door SecurityUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220553639527085802.post-16977718618550522122009-11-21T10:07:00.000-08:002009-11-21T10:22:42.590-08:00Composite Front Doors & SecurityAround two thirds of burglars gain access to a property through a door. With this in mind, it is important for you to consider how secure one of the most vulnerable points of your home is. Not only would a secure front door offer you piece of mind, but it would benefit your insurance coverage and add value to your property.

Wooden and uPVC doors are known for their weaknesses. uPVC doors are often so flimsy that they can easily be kicked in, either ripping from the frame or panels becoming loose. Wooden doors aren't much better, with enough force the entire door can easily crack. They mostly rely on the hardware used, the hinges and the locks, to keep the property relatively secure.
Because composite doors are comprised of several materials, which have each been chosen for their beneficial properties, they do not crack or break up. The hardware used by most composite door manufacturers is of the highest quality, to compliment the superb door. High security hinges, multi-point locks and laminated glass all offer protection whilst you are away from your home and spy holes and security chains reduce the risk of potential intruders taking advantage of you opening your door to the unknown.

If you're in the UK, make sure you get the highest level of security by looking out for the Secured by Design logo.
